It was another glorious day in Teleios. Then again, Baal had to admit that any day his sails flew in Teleios was a glorious day. There was something about the realm of the indebted that satisfied the natural curiosity he had of the worlds that drew him into the life of a pirate.

As he docked, the two men he had hired as crew came out to talk to him, catching him up on gossip from around town while he had been away. Stories to tell of people who came, who left, competition trying to take his business and the like. It was a hard life being a successful privateer - a nicer word than the simple pirate token he carried in most realms - before he dismissed them to go deliver the parcels that he had brought with him from the legitimate jobs he had taken his last visit.

He wasn't going to set up his cart just yet to draw new business. Instead, it was a beautiful day and he was going to go hunt down a few of his own relations and verify that they were still among the city and how they were fairing.

And as always, his first stop was to find his siren of a friend and make sure he was keeping himself out of a noose.

comments

He has had this ship for awhile now, but putting a date on his ship is like putting an age on him - he lost track of time.

The ship is very simple in fact. There is a hatch that led below where there were stations for 14 oarsmen, yet he had no crew as the hammocks for them were empty and dusty except for the few that held items for trade. On deck, there is a single cabin with stairs that led up on both sides above it, and the two larger rudder oars were stationed there as opposed to the Western style steering wheel. The ship has one mast with two white sails that had red trim, and there was hieroglyphics carved into the mast in places as a tribute to the gods.

When entering the cabin, it is obviously his quarters. The walls were covered by silks, and his bed was a pile of pillows that took up a fourth of the room. There was a small standing desk, and a bookcase filled with books and maps and protected with wooden slats to keep them from falling out from the water rocking. There was a few hanging baskets of fruit and dried beef in a corner hanging over a rum barrel, and a chest on the opposite wall which was closed and locked.

When asked how he can control all the sails on his own, he will mention that he has made a few deals to make it work in his favor. If anyone gets the real story - he made a deal with the Sea Witch to obtain a bracelet that will allow him to control the sails and oars with just the power of his mind. He never takes the bracelet off because to lose that will take away his ship.

comments

”Now, my friend, we have come to a very important part of these negotiations,” Baal leaned back in his chair, boots up on the crate that was being used as a table. The man across from him licked his lips, his eyes watching Baal carefully as the pirate was cleaning the dirt out from under his nails with a throwing knife. “This is the part where we skip the sad story of your family and why you must do what you do, and just explain to me what it is you are willing to give me.”

“I know you told me that you wanted a bag of gold, but I can’t afford that,” the farmer spoke, his hands shaking. “But you are the pirate who can get anything, and they took my daughter. I will give you all I own to get her back.”

Baal rolled his head a bit, thinking over the situation. He had enough gold at this point of his life to survive a few lifetimes – something that he did have to think about – but this man was poor and lost his child. His code made it hard for him to deny the request for help, but he had a crew to feed and ones who would be risking their lives walking into the thieves’ camp to try and rescue this young woman. They would demand something for their time and families if they were to die, so he could not do it out of charity.

“What is it on your farm you sow, my friend?”

“Barley after the flood, then leeks and beans until the water returns. I also have a path full of pomegranates trees that bear some of the sweetest seeds in all of Egypt. Pharaoh himself takes a basket each year for the Mother of Kings. My daughter has been learning how to make the beer from our barley.”

Baal nodded. That would do very well. “When we bring your daughter back, you will provide me with ten barrels of this beer every year for five years. I have a business in Memphis that will benefit from this, as will my crew. Tonight, you will bring us a basket of these pomegranates for us to feast on before we ride into the desert. I believe this is a fair deal for the return of your daughter.”

Tears welled up in the farmer’s eyes. “Yes, yes, I will make her learn how to brew the best beer in all of Egypt for you and your men.” He stood, bowing in thanks to the three other pirates in the room before giving Baal a deep bow. “And you will have the fruits by sundown.”

Baal smirked, waving his hand in the air. “By your leave then.”

Once the farmer was gone, one of the pirates turned to Baal. “You expect us to save a farmer’s daughter for beer and fruit?”

Baal gave the man a look. “I only need three men to come with me, and the beer will make us more money in five years than the farmer would be able to give us in gold in ten. It is a fair deal, and you do not need to come if you wish to stay behind and protect the tavern.”

The pirate started to mutter as he stormed out of the back room. Baal got up, taking his captain's hat from the table and carefully putting it back on. he then turned to look at the other two men in the room, grinning. “I believe it is time for us to go and save the fair daughter of our farmer friend. Hopefully these bandits will know what's best for them and not harm her before we find them.”

"What will happen if they do?"

Baal's grin dropped to a deadly serious look. "Then they will have no need to learn what their future holds, for this day will be their last."

comments
